Bungay Half Marathon

10 Apr 2011

Alistair Cooke reports:

Well what a great day (for the spectators), although unfortunately less than ideal conditions for the runners today, particularly those attempting the full 26.2 miles around Beccles and Bungay.

Summer had made an somewhat premature appearance, with the mercury hitting 18 degrees at the start of the half-marathon when the gun fired at 12.30pm, but already by this time the full marathon runners were out completing the first lap of the 13 mile course after their 10.30am start.

The lap consisted of a lumpy/bumpy/undulating first 6.5 miles outbound, followed by a less undulating bumpy return leg home. For the full marathon runners this meant we were not envying them attempting the hills the second time round come mile 14 through 20!!.

The nice thing was the support the half-marathon runners were able to give the full distance runners on the way round, although that said, I'm not sure from the point of view of a marathon runner they were as equally happy seeing the fresh-legged runners going past, but I did stop and ask Arthur if he needed a Gel, Drink, Jelly Snake or Cornetto on my way past. Arthur - I'm still good for that Ice cream if you fancy it now finally??? :)

This was a fantastically organised race, held at the local football and sports club, with plenty of parking and toilets and showers. There was much merriment with the mass-participation warm-up at the start of the half-marathon. And we also saw some little ones proudly wearing their medals from a fun run held earlier in the morning. So it was a really family affair and a race I would do again, but maybe with a cheeky overnight stay in Beccles/Lowestoft for a nice family weekend mini-break (if the weather can be as good again next year!).

Oh and great Ice cream and Burger van (guilt free for those who had completed the course).
