Three Peaks Fell Race 24m 4500ft ascent 25 April 2009 Steve White reports: This race takes in the summits of Pen-Y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough which is a classic walking route. The ascent of Pen-Y-Ghent is relatively easy, and you then have a long run across to the Ribblehead viaduct followed by the tortuous ascent of Whernside. After that you follow a straightforward route to Ingleborough, which as the last climb of the day really saps the energy levels. After that all that remains is the 5 mile route back to the start at Horton, cramp is a big problem in this race and many runners suffer. Like the London Marathon runners we were 'blessed' with sunny weather and dry conditions. |
