Bath Half Marathon

15 March 2009

Chris Dodge reports:

Last year's race was cold, wet and windy, but this year's couldn't have been more different; warm sun and almost no wind. Despite the good conditions the start was delayed half an hour, fortunately the mid-March sun keeping us all pretty warm.

Standing around on the start line, I had a quick chat to a Kenyan chap (Simon Tonui) with number 1 on his vest. How fast was he going to run I asked? He gave a wide but slightly sheepish grin - "not too fast, about 63 mins I think". This he did, coming in over a minute in front of the second place.

My race started quite well, going through 10K in about 38mins, only 30s down on last year, so I thought I may get away with my lack of miles over the last few weeks. Another few km and it was still just about OK, but I started slowing down and the stream of runners coming past increased as I dropped several minutes over the last third of the race.

Nonetheless, it was a good race in fantastic conditions and a lot of support all the way round.
