Shining Tor Fell Race 5.9m 1600ft ascent

Steve White reports:

The race took place in the beautiful Goyt Valley in the Peak District, a 1 hour drive after work but well worth it.

A very warm muggy evening brought out lots of midges and flies, but this was the only downside on an otherwise lovely evening.

The starter gave us the advice that "if in doubt just follow Lloyd", as Lloyd Taggart is one of the top fell runners in Britain. This was easier said than done and I lost him after about 100m (he eventually set a course record with a time of 41.33 - only 7 minute miles).

For us mere mortals, it was a challenging course with some steady ups and long downhills, finishing with a very steep 300m run up a road! Only one runner got lost, and to cheer him the organiser gave him a bottle of wine.

I had a steady run, picking up a few places in the second half of the race.
