Bakewell Mini Mountain Marathon Gavin Long reports: Another fabulous event. It was the most perfect December morning – cold, crisp and clear. The course demanded more speed with less navigation than last time, which seemed ideal for me, although my finishing position suggests otherwise. After 2½ hours of hard running, I had a brain-freeze and lost about 25 minutes trying to find checkpoint 12. I then should have headed straight to the finish, but stubbornly I tried to nab 3 more checkpoints on my route back. Being 12 minutes late cost me 30 valuable points (more than the last three checkpoints put together), so a lesson has been learnt. I covered 20 miles, managed 15 out of the 22 checkpoints and had Bakewell Tart for tea. It’s was Paul’s first attempt at a MMM, so he can be excused losing one-third of his points in time penalties. 51st Gavin Long 3:27:26 240pts -30 penalty pts = 210pts total 113th Paul Burgess 3:34:27 185 pts -65 penalty pts = 120pts total |
