Ballbuster Duathlon Gavin Long reports: Luckily the Ballbuster didn’t live up to it's name. It was tough, but it's difficulty was exaggerated. It was billed as being ‘as tough as a marathon’, and considering it was the most expensive event I have ever entered, I had expected something more spectacular. The 8 mile route on the roads around Box Hill is tackled 5 times. Once on foot, three on the bike and then again on foot. Each loop finishes with the climb, featuring the ‘zig-zag’ switchbacks, up to the summit. The rain, wind, leaves and other debris made cycling pretty treacherous or at least, made it pretty treacherous for me. I was taking risks with the bike, but still being continuously overtaken by far more able cyclists. I was disappointed with a bottom half finishing position. I know that I’d missed a lot of training, but I don’t think I would have faired much better even if I’d been fully fit. Did I mention that the winner lapped me twice ? |
